On Saturday, 12th November UNFPA Iran participated in a media event organized by the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), UNFPA's long-standing partner and the government agency responsible for running the census which is currently drawing to a close. As part of the 7 billion actions campaign, the event marked the enumeration of the 70 millionth person in Iran. Click here for the Photos and video of the event.
SCI Deputy for Resource Development, Logistics and Provincial Affairs, Mr. Parsa, UNFPA staff and local media accompanied enumerators on a census visit to a household in central Tehran which was estimated to house the 70 millionth person counted in the country. The census respondent, high ranking SCI officials and UNFPA staff (Kambiz Kabiri) were all interviewed by IRIB National TV News Channel 1 and ISNA press agency. The TV report was aired on the main 9pm news broadcast yesterday evening. Kambiz Kabiri praised the SCI for the smooth running of the census and detailed UNFPA's support to SCI's efforts, echoing key messages from UNFPA’s 7 billion campaign.
Delegations from Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member-states such as Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan visited to Iran to learn from its best practices in enumeration. In a speech given at an earlier event organized by SCI on 2nd November including international guests, UNFPA representative Dr. Uz highlighted the importance of Iran’s South-South cooperation with countries from the region and beyond.
