UNFPA and national partners convened the Joint Steering Committee of the UNFPA Country Programme (2023–2027) in Tehran to review implementation progress and strengthen collaboration in advancing national priorities related to health, population, and social wellbeing.

Co-chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and UNFPA, the meeting brought together senior representatives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare, the State Welfare Organization, the Statistical Center of Iran, the Iranian Red Crescent Society, and the National Population Headquarters. Participants discussed programme achievements, implementation challenges, and opportunities to further enhance cooperation and impact.

Mr. Saadaati-Nejad, Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to partnership with UNFPA, stating, “Mutual cooperation with UNFPA is grounded in national ownership, mutual trust, and ensuring quality implementation.” He highlighted the importance of close coordination between UNFPA and national institutions, noting that effective collaboration and regular progress review are essential to achieving programme results and responding to emerging needs.

The meeting reviewed ongoing initiatives supporting maternal health, emergency preparedness, population data systems, and services for vulnerable groups, including older persons and persons living with disabilities. Government partners emphasized the value of technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and strengthening national capacities to ensure sustainable outcomes and improve service delivery.

UNFPA Representative in Iran, Mr. Keita Ohashi, welcomed the continued engagement of national partners and underscored the importance of joint efforts. “We deeply value the strong partnership with the Government and implementing partners,” he said. “Regular coordination and field engagement allow us to better understand needs and further mobilize support to expand successful interventions.”

Discussions also highlighted the importance of integrated humanitarian and development approaches, including support for refugee and host communities together, and strengthening resilience in the face of emergencies. Participants noted the role of innovation and partnerships in enhancing programme effectiveness and ensuring that solutions remain responsive to national priorities.

Reaffirming UNFPA’s continued commitment, Mr. Ohashi stated, “All UNFPA interventions are aligned with national priorities, and we remain committed to working closely with our partners to deliver meaningful and sustainable results under the Country Programme.”
