UNFPA Iran Country Office is co-hosting a regional conference on ageing from 23-25th October 2018 in collaboration with HelpAge Asia-Pacific and the Ministry of Cooperative, Labour and Welfare and State Welfare Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran.  Other partners include Age International and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The conference will have “Family, Community and State in Ageing Societies” as its theme. The premise of the conference is that demographic ageing is having profound impact on societal dynamics in Asia, and the functions of the family (traditionally assumed to be responsible for older people), communities and governments are changing rapidly, but often without sufficient reflection. We need to re-examine the roles of these three key parties – how they can reinforce each other and how they relate with older people themselves, who are increasingly independent for longer periods in old age.

 Expected outcomes

  • Greater understanding of how communities and governments can work together to support families facing challenges associated with rapid population ageing
  • Shared international experience in how countries shape their public policies, structures and services to adapt to demographic change
  • Wider and deeper networking among a range of organizations interested in ageing in the Asia-Pacific region and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

We will keep you informed of the details and the agenda of the Conference.  Meanwhile, please do not hesitate to share with us any article, study, story and new policies for the elderly in your country.
